Measuring Your Mattress & Choosing the Right Pocket Depth
Posted by Kristen Stannix on
Why Mattress Depth Matters
Fitted sheets don’t always fit the way you want them to. Modern mattresses are often much deeper than they used to be, especially if you have a pillow-top, euro-top, or mattress topper. If your sheets are too shallow, you’ll constantly struggle with corners popping off.
How to Measure Your Mattress
- Remove all bedding.
- Using a tape measure, measure from the base to the very top of the mattress, including any topper or pad.
- Record the full height (depth) in inches.
Understanding Pocket Depth
- Standard Pocket (up to 14") – Best for most traditional mattresses.
- Deep Pocket (15–17") – Ideal for modern mattresses with plush tops or thin toppers.
- Extra-Deep Pocket (18"+) – Designed for very tall pillow-top mattresses or those with thick toppers.
Tip: Add extra depth when choosing your sheets:
- Cotton Sheets: Add 3–4” to your mattress depth
- Flannel & Bamboo Sheets: Add 4” to your mattress depth
